A multi-linguist is originally defined as a person who is able to speak more than one language. This is the very basic definition of a multi-lingual person, the person who has the basic know-how of many languages.

But does that make him jack of all trades and master of none.

Well! Not necessary.

There is a lot of people who learn their mother languages from their home and have full command over it, speaking, reading and writing without any punctuation and grammatical mistake. But there might be a different language being spoken at the school and the world outside their houses, which makes them equally good in that language also. Some families travel more, so their kids become multi-lingual, a very valuable knowledge that they have without adopting any special qualification or degree. But the question is, do they always adopt to be a translator? Rather I would say, NO, not necessary. This knowledge was based on their race for survival, a necessity and not a choice.

Good translators are by choice and not by necessity. There is a big difference between them, necessity only give machine translations and choice gives the quality. We see some people, who are efficiently multi-lingual, e.g. their mother tongue is French or Spanish, but English is their necessity, they have to study books in English and speak in French. This would make them good English speakers but not the native ones. This defines their understanding towards the language and not their expertness. They will be good translators from English to Spanish or French but an average one in French or Spanish to English. But if they are qualified translators, they would be good in both, just because of the proper qualification in that field; they would learn the grammar and literature of the language to become an expert. This is how we can say that the person is officially a translator, a multi-linguist.

The qualification, the knowledge by choice, makes the person a multi-lingual and not the knowledge by necessity. Many people might not agree to this and believe it as offensive, but the fact is, there might be some people who call themselves good translators but are not technically qualified in that field and some say that they know 3-4 languages all at expert level, so that make them an agency and not just a person. But there might be other good examples, who take their profession more seriously than those who have knowledge of it.

So, we can conclude that it’s only based on the choices we make for ourselves not only in our qualification but also in our profession and passion and that decide whether we are good or not.
