A content marketer is responsible for tasks involving content creation and diffusion; including planning, creating and sharing valuable content. The objective is to attract audiences and turn prospects to consumers, as well as gain loyalty. Indeed, good content is important for a business because it creates value and helps position any firm.

Therefore, the role of content marketing often goes to a skilled person who masters diverse disciplines including marketing, social media knowledge and knowledge on proofreading and editing.

Since a content marketer needs to ensure the quality of the written pieces, part of their work often involves activities of editing and proofreading, even if professional proofreaders will check those pieces later. Here are some things every content marketer should keep in mind when going through processes of proofreading and editing.

First of all, make sure you understand the purpose of the piece for both, the audience and the company, this will help you know if it was written with the right direction. Later, you should read the content as a reader would, without taking notes. Only once you have finished with this, you can go through the document as an editor would do, ready to make corrections if necessary. It is a good idea to have a style manual or guide by your side to facilitate the process and you can also use a spelling and grammar checker.

There are different apps that do grammar checking. It is suggested that an editor uses at least one. You can go through the content with the help of the checker once or twice but keep in mind that not every suggestion will be correct or the best option so make sure to re-read and search for logic according to your audience. It is important that you keep in mind the level of knowledge they will have on a certain topic or certain vocabulary, this will guarantee the readability of your piece and, often, the success of it.

Some questions to ask yourself while doing revision could include facts like whether or not the opening grabs the attention of the reader, the content focuses on a singular topic throughout the piece, the information shared is understandable for the target audience, the content flows logically, etc. You can take notes and mark spaces that need an adjustment before making any modification.

Writers and content creators in general should proofread their own work several times before passing a draft. However, it is easy for a writer to read what they intended to say rather than what is written. Therefore, doing proofreading on your own sometimes supposes a higher challenge.

A trick often used in the industry is to change the font after completing a piece. Additionally, it is always advisable to read the document aloud, this way you have more than just one sense involved in the process of editing and can ensure if what you are saying makes sense.

Finally, go through a final reading to ensure the content reads well and conveys the right information, with the right tone.
