Each year we get to acknowledge the Book Lovers Day on August 9, a day for celebrating our love for Literature and appreciate all the amazing ways books have shaped our lives over the years. This day encourages us all to find our favorite reading place and immerse ourselves into marvelous worlds and stories.
From the scent of a rare first edition found in an old time collection to a fresh book at the local supermarket or the library, the very sight of a promising reading can bring back memories, a magic we honor during Book Lovers Day.
There is still much mystery surrounding the origin of the Book Lovers Day. Indeed, both the origin and creator of this holiday are unknown. Nonetheless, Google Trends shows that searches for “National Book Lovers Day” began in August 2007 while searches for “Book Lovers Day” started in November 2004.
Today, celebrating this fantastic love, we present some interesting facts about books.
1. The most expensive book ever purchased was sold for USD$30.8 million
Leonardo Da Vinci’s book “Codex Leicester” is the most expensive book in history. According to Business Insider, Bill Gates purchased it.
2. Book sales revenue has been climbing and eBook sales are decreasing
Once upon a time, book publishers around the world feared that ebooks would kill physical books like online downloads and streaming affected the music industry. However, recent financial reports show that sales of books are climbing. In August 2017, a report by Talking New Media showed that book publishers’ revenue hit USD$2.33 billion for the first quarter of 2017 (4.9% compared to the first quarter of 2016).
3. The longest sentence ever printed is 823 words
According to Barnes and Noble, the longest sentence printed in all history counts with 823 words and it belongs to no other than Victor Hugo. The author included this long sentence in his magnificent “Les Miserables”.
4. The 3 most read books in the world
There are hundreds of thousands in the world, from all origins and ages. The most read books in the world until now are The Holy Bible, Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-Tung and none other than Harry Potter.
5. The United Nations organizes World Book and Copyright Day
National Book Lovers Day is not the only book holiday. On April 23, the United Nations holds World Book and Copyright Day. This is the same day Cervantes, Shakespeare and Garcilaso de la Vega died, in 1616.
Here is the statement on the UN website:
“It was a natural choice for UNESCO’s General Conference, held in Paris in 1995, to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity. With this in mind, UNESCO created the World Book and Copyright Day.”
