Doing business in China is more challenging to company owners and managers alike compared to Europe or other places. This does not only relate to the Chinese language or different dialects spoken throughout China, but also to customs and To-Do´s and Not-To-Do´s when dealing with Chinese officials or business partners, as well as suppliers.
Unlike other blog posts, we do not want to throw numbers at you how much potential the Chinese market has, or how many people speak Chinese (may it be Mandarin, Cantonese or Simplified, Traditional Chinese) because if you are truly interested, you already have done your homework on these.
Let´s focus on why you should learn Chinese and Chinese customs and how:
The why can be answered from different perspectives – well you might have not expected this opening clause, but it´s true. If you are a manager or company owner doing business, you are more likely interested in the opportunity and minimizing your risk by understanding the other side, being able to maneuver through negotiations or simply checking on your suppliers or staff without the need of having to rely on an interpreter that you may not be able to fully trust ever. And this is by the way a smart move.
Now looking at this from another perspective, Chinese skills are rare, and you certainly make yourself more appealing to companies that you may want to get hired from. While many manages have a great background in their area of expertise, having a language skill on top of a great degree, might make the difference when it comes to being hired or selected for a big project, that you really want to work on. Not convinced? Ask your HR Team, we have had many HR representatives checking in with our language learning division to receive feedback on our students when it comes to evaluations or selection processes.
The “HOW” is rather simple: You have several options available when you scroll through the Internet and some of them are outlined in our blog post Learning A New Language Online. As described herein at Wagner Consulting we offer an online solution, basically a virtual classroom that allows you to attend your classes through your laptop online. We at Wagner Consulting love the online solution we offer, as you will have no commute (yay to no traffic), no overtime staying in your office or attending a language institute. Rather we believe that you should work with a native teacher from the comfort of your home, being surrounded by your family.
Now let´s come to the “Why” you should trust us?
Our teachers are native speakers of the target language. This means that a person who is not raised with Chinese as their native language will not teach you how to speak. The native speaker principle will help you to adapt to pronunciation and help you not only learn the language but learn more about the culture itself.
On the other hand, will you work with experts on cultural knowledge that have business experience and have worked in China, or have a business background either in China or doing business with China.
We focus on getting you read to maneuver through China and be able to interact with locals, keeping your goal in mind, meaning a person who wants to learn Chinese because of upcoming travels or a stay abroad will learn in a different setting than a person who must negotiate business deals or do business in China.
Now combine these aspects with an advanced IT solution and add a huge portion of human skills (your teacher´s experience, language skills and know-how) into this equation, and you should have a strong urge to join this program.
Having this decision-making process overcome, you most likely will have another important question that relates to how long it will take you to learn Chinese. There is no firm answer to this, as this relates to your own learning pace. But in general, our students can interact with locals as fast as three weeks. It is not random that we receive feedback from our beginner students telling us that they applied their language skills in upcoming travels and tell us excitedly that they were able to order their food, ask for directions or order their drinks after that little time. This is especially important as not many Chinese in the backcountry of China are able to communicate in English (especially the older population).
We hope you enjoyed reading this and we´d love to see you soon in one of our upcoming Chinese courses. Don´t forget to send us an email to learn how you can sign-up for the next class.
