Today we want to celebrate this special day with all the members of the language industry.

International translation day is celebrated every year thanks to St. Jerome, who was born on September 30, 420 AD and became famous for translating most of the Bible from Hebrew and Greek into Latin, this translation became the only official Catholic translation of this book for thousand years.

Other famous translators

The list of famous translators is very long, same as their contributions to the industry. Here are just some of them.

Jorge Luis Borges

He is best known for his books, and two-time nomination for the Nobel Prize, but Jorge Luis Borges was also a notable translator. He started early by translating Oscar Wilde’s The Happy Prince into Spanish when he was only 9 years old.

He later translated William Faulkner, Franz Kafka, Edgar Allan Poe, Walt Whitman, Virginia Woolf and more into Spanish.

Margot Bortlin

The American translator and interpreter became famous for her translations from German into English in the Nuremberg Trials after World War II. She transformed the way interpretation was conceived, setting the foundations for modern simultaneous interpretation.

Constance Garnett

Constance Garnett was famous for her translations of Russian literature, including works by Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, and Chekhov. She had a controversial style even at that time but her work introduced well renown Russian authors to an English-speaking public, influencing writers like Ernest Hemingway.

Edward George Seidensticker

He was one of the most popular Japanese translators. According to the New York Times, his translations of Yasunari Kawabata’s work are credited with helping the writer to secure the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1968.
