Celebrated on April 23th around the world, the International Day of the English Language is the day to honor diversity, both linguistically and culturally, stablished by the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). The date was chosen to commemorate the death of the English poet and playwriter William Shakespeare.

Established in 2010, the English language day is celebrated every year on the 23rd of April. The day was created to celebrate the English language as it is one of the official languages of the United Nations. The day is also one of the six worldwide days for languages with the ultimate goal of promoting the same use of all six, including French, celebrated on the 20th of March; Arabic, celebrated on the 18th of December; Chinese, celebrated on the 20th of April; Russian, celebrated on the 6th of June; and Spanish, celebrated on the 23 April.

The English language has developed over a period of almost 1,500 years, with the earliest presence in England around the fifth century, when the language was brought to the island by the Anglo-Saxon settlers. As a Germanic language it has gradually become one of the most influential languages in the world.

During the 20th century, the popularity and worldwide influence of the English language was broadened by the emergence of the United States as one of the world's superpowers as a result of World War II, as well as through English-language films, television and radio programs from Hollywood, and the British broadcaster BBC.

This beautiful language is one of the few that allows people of different language groups to communicate in different social and work circles, as well as the official language in about 60 states, the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU). In terms of native speakers, English, Mandarin and Hindi are the most widely spoken languages in the world. An estimated 400 million people worldwide speak English as their native language. There are also about one billion people speaking it as a second, third, or fourth language, bringing a large portion of world into the English-speaking community.

The ability to absorb and assimilate components of other languages while maintaining a unified core that is understandable to all makes English particularly suited to the globalization that we see today.

English has become an actual world language that no longer belongs only to its native speakers, but to all of us. Here at Wagner we are delighted to celebrate this day. Happy English language day to all of you!
